In 2009, the American Shakespeare Center began the cycle of plays by William Shakespeare that chronicled (not altogether accurately) the Wars of the Roses. "Richard III," the fourth and final installment in Shakespeare's first history tetralogy, is now on tap at the Blackfriars Playhouse and marks the second play in the 2012 Actors' Renaissance Season.
The three "Henry VI" plays that preceded "Richard III" were colorful, sometimes confusing but always entertaining thanks to the creative vision of the actors who doubled as their own directors. The greatest contribution, however, came at the hands of whoever actually cast the plays, for the actors who slipped into the skins of the tetralogy's myriad characters were remarkably suited for them and sometimes left indelible impressions in the minds of audiences.
