July 10th-12th, 2013
Since 2010, ASC Education has sought to expand our fantastic summer programming to a broader audience, inviting parents, teachers, scholars, students, and enthusiasts of all ages and experience levels to join us for immersive exploration. In 2013, we are expanding our Summer Teacher Seminar to a three-day adventure in the mechanics of putting together a play in your classroom. From cutting, doubling, and casting to costume considerations to the language work that forms the basis of all of the ASC's productions, we will walk you through some techniques to get Shakespeare's plays up on their feet and in your students' bodies.
"I learned so much from that one exercise about discovery, blocking, embedded cues, playing with the script to find answers, etc. The energy of Cass and Sarah and the passion and depth of understanding they have for the plays really rubs off and is inspiring." -- Winter 2013 Seminar Participant

When: From Class to Cast: 2013 Summer Teacher Seminar will be held July 10th - 12th, 2013.
What: During the three days of camp, participants will explore Shakespeare's rehearsal and staging conditions through the lens of play preparation: What did it take for Shakespeare's company to get a play up on the stage of the Theatre, the Globe, or the Blackfriars? What does it take to mount a production in the Blackfriars Playhouse today? How can you use these techniques in your classroom? This Summer Special Seminar will explore these questions, along with our regular array of Shakespeare's Staging Conditions.
We will test-run our work using The Comedy of Errors, which, with its small cast size, simple-to-process verse, and laugh-out-loud humor, is a great starter script for teachers who are new to directing.
Who: Campers will work with Dr. Ralph Alan Cohen, author of ShakesFear and How to Cure It as well as ASC actors, ASC Education staff, and special guest presenters.
Where: Camp will be held at the Blackfriars Playhouse in Staunton, VA. Campers who wish to stay at the Stonewall Jackson Hotel may take advantage of the hotel's special ASC Education rate.
Cost: Day Camper Rate: $300
*Please note that registration is not guaranteed until a minimum of 12 participants have signed up; if that minimum is not met, all deposits will be refunded.
Successful participation in the camp will yield approximately 19.5 hours of Professional Development points towards re-certification.
