As part of SHAKESPEARE WEEK, celebrating Shakespeare's 450th birthday, the ASC is pleased to host renowned Shakespeare educator and actor Ben Crystal as he presents a lecture on Original Practices.
Crystal is the founder of Passion in Practice, a group devoted to "ignoring all the emendations that have been made over the centuries by non-theatre practitioners...with the idea that the Folio text is the closest to the author’s intentions and was written to be understood by actors." They ask the question - "How far could we follow the text exactly as it was printed – irrespective of compositors’ mistakes – and what directions and new ideas could we find from such a strict approach?"
He is also the author of Shakespeare on Toast: Getting a Taste for the Bard as well as the introductor to the new Springboard Shakespeare series of plays.
Ben Crystal is an actor and writer. He studied English Language and Linguistics at Lancaster University, before training as an actor. He has worked in TV, film and theatre, including the 2006 season at Shakespeare’s Globe, and is a narrator for RNIB Talking Books, Channel 4 and the BBC. Clips of Ben’s acting and narration work can be seen and heard at his website, www.bencrystal.com.
He co-wrote Shakespeare’s Words (Penguin 2002) and The Shakespeare Miscellany (Penguin 2005) with his father, David Crystal, and his new series of introductions to the plays, Springboard Shakespeare, was published by Bloomsbury in June 2013.
He regularly gives workshops on performing and speaking Shakespeare via his ensemble, Passion in Practice.
