Elizabethan & Jacobean Seating Options

At the Blackfriars Playhouse, you experience Shakespeare's plays as audiences did four centuries ago, but with modern creature comforts thrown in. Choose from three levels of seating:

• Lords’ Chairs with carved wooden armrests, plump cushions, and leather seatbacks. The best seats in the house, then and now.
• Section A Benches with cushions and a seatback, located throughout the main level.
• Gallants’ Stools directly on stage or in the Lords’ Room above the stage. These seats put you right in the middle of the action.
  • Please Note: Empty Gallants' Stools are released to all patrons during the preshow speech (approximately 15 minutes before curtain). Plan to arrive 15-30 minutes before show time to claim your reserved Gallants' Stools.
• General Admission seating offers economical first-come, first-served seating with cushions but without seatbacks. You may reserve a space in this section, but you may not reserve a specific seat.

Ticket Delivery

Once you reserve your tickets, we can either hold them for you at our box office will call desk -- which we recommend -- or we can send them to you by postal mail for a shipping and handling fee of $1.00 per order.

Refunds and Exchanges

All tickets are non-refundable, but can be exchanged to another performance with 48 hours notice and a $2.00 fee per ticket. Any tickets received at the box office before the performance may also qualify as a tax-deductible donation.

Ways to Save

• Groups of 15 or more enjoy 20% off reserved ticket prices. Contact the ASC Group Sales Manager at 540.885.5588, ext. 24, or at groupsales@americanshakespearecenter.com for more information.
• Rush Tickets Available in-person, one hour prior to performance, subject to availability. Midweek Local rush(Wednesdays and Thursdays, $18) includes residents of Staunton, Waynesboro, and Augusta County. Student Rush tickets are available for $12. High school and college students must present a valid ID.
• AAA Members and Military Personnel save 10% off any regularly-priced ticket. These tickets must be ordered by phone or in person in order to receive a discount.

Pay What You Will

At certain performances, you may “pay what you will” after you enjoy the show. For those who wish to reserve seats, tickets are available at our regular prices. Check individual show Special Events or our full calendar for Pay What You Will (P) dates.

Cameras and Video Recorders

Cameras and recording devices are prohibited inside the Blackfriars Playhouse except during Playhouse Tours.

Please Be On Time

Latecomers may lose their reserved seats and will be seated at the discretion of the house manager.

Refreshments at your Seat

Refreshments are available onstage before the show and during the intermission as well as at the new permanent bar in our upstairs lobby. We welcome you to enjoy anything you purchase while you watch the show.

Access Services

• We offer wheelchair accessible seating in both the reserved and general admission sections for all our performances. Please contact the Blackfriars Playhouse Box Office to reserve wheelchair accessible seating.
• Hearing-assistance receivers and printed copies of our playtexts are available at no charge for the hearing impaired, but please reserve your copy when you order your tickets to ensure availability.
• Vision-impaired patrons may request a complimentary companion ticket.
• Service dogs are permitted in the Blackfriars Playhouse. Please let the Blackfriars Playhouse Box Office know if a service dog will accompany you.

Youth Admission Policy

• ASC welcomes children 7 and older to the Blackfriars Playhouse throughout the year. 
• Children 3 and older are welcome to A Christmas Carol during the Holiday Season 
• Some of our plays contain material unsuitable for children. For specific information about any show in the season, call the ASC Education Department at 540.885.5588, ext. 21.

Parking

Historic Downtown Staunton has street parking throughout, as well as two parking garages (the corner of Johnson Street and New Street, just behind the Blackfriars Playhouse, and on the corner of Johnson Street and Central Avenue). Both garages have nominal parking fees that can be paid with CASH ONLY. ASC patrons may obtain change at the Blackfriars Playhouse Box Office. A metered parking lot is located on the corner of Beverley Street and Market Street (less than a block from the Blackfriars Playhouse). The meters are $0.25 an hour between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Parking is free outside of these hours.

Handicapped spaces: There are two handicapped spaces directly in front of the Blackfriars Playhouse at 10 South Market St.

Severe Weather Policy

Performances continue as scheduled unless we experience a loss of power at the Blackfriars Playhouse. For patrons who cannot travel safely, we waive our standard exchange fee and gladly issue replacement tickets for another performance of the same play. Simply contact the Blackfriars Playhouse Box Office within 24 hours after your missed show to make arrangements.
