In 2007, long-time ASC board member Preston “Pres” C. Manning, Jr., MD, was awarded the Robin Goodfellow Award.
Manning was ASC’s first board chair after co-founder Ralph Alan Cohen. He joined the ASC board in 2000. A graduate of Washington and Lee University and Yale Medical School, Manning completed a surgical residency at the Mayo Clinic. He lives in Staunton, VA.
"Pres Manning led us through one of our most critical growth spurts,” said ASC co-founder and Artistic Director Jim Warren, “as the ASC transitioned from being solely a nomadic touring company through the capital campaign that built the Blackfriars to be our home; his leadership allowed us to become the Center we are now and made it possible for us to dream of our future."
"It is a special honor to receive the Robin Goodfellow Award,” said Manning, “and to be recognized by those who have worked very hard and ably to bring the plays of the greatest writer in English to a wide and appreciative audience, and to educate us all in the marvels of Shakespeare’s works. They speak the truth about us humans as comprehensively as any writings outside the Hebrew and Christian scriptures. I thank the American Shakespeare Center for this gratifying award and foresee an ever greater future for the Center and its vision."
