Anti-Racism Process Statement

ASC Response to “We See You White American Theater”

As a predominately white company, the American Shakespeare Center acknowledges that we have benefited from the culture of white supremacy that dominates our field and our society. We pledge as a company to eliminate the patterns of racism and inequity embedded in our practices. We are committed to becoming the anti-racist organization that our community needs and our BIPOC artists and staff deserve.

With the guidance of a professional restorative justice team, the American Shakespeare Center has begun the work of self-examination and rebuilding.

This process will prepare the ground for a vigorous answer to the call to action created by the We See You White American Theatre collective. It is the crucial first step in effecting permanent and meaningful change for our organization.

Like many theatres across the country, we have long claimed to be a place where every employee, artist, student, audience member, and community member feels welcomed and respected. The work of 2021 is to make it so. Our legacy will be to keep it so.
