Tour the Blackfriars Playhouse
Bring the inside story on Shakespeare’s indoor playhouse into your home! LEARN about the historical predecessor, DISCOVER the inner workings of our 21st-century professional company, and EXPLORE the world’s only re-creation of Shakespeare’s indoor theatre. Join ASC Education Team member Lia Wallace on a Blackfriars Playhouse tour from wherever you are.
ATTEND A VIRTUAL SHXCADEMY!
The ASC Education Team brings its multi-day SHXcademy workshop series to the internet via live-streamed learning at affordable per student/household rates available to both individuals and groups. In four scheduled classes over 3 days, we’ll break Shakespeare’s text into pieces, like a puzzle that connects character, story, and compelling moments. In the final “Directing Shakespeare” class students watch the pieces come to life on stage performed by ASC’s professional actors, directing them to gain ownership of Shakespeare and see how much these stories are for now. Each SHXcademy series begins on a Thursday and ends on a Saturday and focuses on a specific text — plus, the price includes a link to stream that performance on your own time. Appropriate for students in middle school and up.
TRY OUR Study Guides & Activities
American Shakespeare Center’s celebrated Study Guides are a valuable published resource, providing a start-to-finish outline for exploring a play through ASC’s methods of performance-based learning. Here they are available digitally, as excerpts for the casual user and for purchase for those who want to dig deeper. ASC’s Education Department’s mission is to help recover the joy of Shakespeare through his wordcraft and stagecraft. Students of all ages will discover that Shakespeare uses their language to tell their stories — stories of love and hate, jealousy and betrayal, dysfunctional families and challenging friendships —stories as vital and vivid now as they were four hundred years ago.
