COURSES
  • Each Spring Session course lasts 6 weeks.
  • Each course meets weekly for roughly 1 hour with their instructor.
  • Classes begin April 27 (just after Shakespeare’s Birthday!)
  • Appropriate for ages 14 and up (unless otherwise indicated).
  • Limit of 10 students per class.
  • Each 6-week course is $120.

An Actor Prepares

Take a deep dive with Brandon Carter as he prepares for two roles in the upcoming Marquee Season — Michael Cassio in Othello, and the Bassanio in The Merchant of Venice. Learn the steps of building a character from the inside out, including character analysis, the dissection of meaning, and of course, memorization.

While she prepares for the title role in Othello, join Jessika on her unique approach to understanding character through yoga and chakras. Learn why Jessika sees yoga as a practice available to everyone and anyone who needed some physical, mindful, and spiritual guidance in their life. It’s an approach to Yoga+Shakespeare in ways you’ve never thought about before.

AN ACTOR PREPARES…DINNER

with Zoe Speas

Ever wonder how an actor prepares…their meals? They work long hours, have limited budgets, and often dwell in company housing, so they have to think ahead. Get in the kitchen with actor Zoe Speas, the daughter of teachers, theatre-makers, and restaurant owners, as she shares secrets perfect for quarantine cooking on how to make a meal and then make it last for more than one sitting. In partnership with local family-owned winery Barren Ridge Vineyards, each meal will be thoughtfully paired with a wine recommendation available for purchase online. Any Shakespeare is served on the side.

Brush Up Your Shakespeare…Text Analysis

with JOHN HARRELL

ASC actor/manager for text, and resident language-guru John Harrell, teaches you how to parse, to paraphrase, to research, and, when necessary, to cut using the texts from Henry IV, Parts 1 & 2 derived from ASC’s Actors’ Renaissance Season. No script required, you can do it all on your laptop as John guides you through the steps.
Wednesdays at 7 pm; First class April 29.

Prep: John will email each class their prep materials the week-of. The only supplies you need is a comfy chair.

Sing it like Shakespeare:
A Guide to Writing Music ASC Style

with Chris Johnston

ASC’s actor/manager for music, and the genius behind our crowd-sourced approach to creating the pre and intermission playlists, leads you step-by-step through his process for creating a song from a Shakespeare text, no matter what instrument you have available, or even what you think you don’t know how to play. The class will cover songs in Shakespeare plays as diverse as Twelfth Night, Much Ado About Nothing, The Winter’s Tale, and The Tempest. No experience required.

Inside/Out: Period Costume and Theatrical Design

with HOPE MADDOX

ASC’s costume shop manager Hope Maddox lecture/demonstrates on historical fashions from Tudor to Jacobean to Regency to now, and shows how a clever designer can “cheat” when it comes to making them for the stage. A must for anyone who wants to know what goes on in all
those layers, and what goes under them. For once, no sewing is required.
