THE ROBIN GOODFELLOW AWARD

Judy Cohen

For extraordinary service to the American Shakespeare Center

This year we honor Judy Cohen, whose support and untold work helped create and sustain the American Shakespeare Center from its birth.

THE ASC BURBAGE AWARD

Sir Trevor Nunn

For achievement in expanding the love of Shakespeare through the production of his plays

Sir Trevor Nunn has served as the artistic director of the Royal Shakespeare Company, the Royal National Theatre, and the Theatre Royal Haymarket. He joined the Royal Shakespeare Company when he was twenty-four and four years later was named its artistic director. His work is celebrated for its depth, for its breadth—classical theatre, musicals, opera, film—and for his nurturing of actors, many of whom have become household names. His productions of Cats and Les Misérables ushered in a golden age of British musicals. His many awards speak to the admiration of Nunn’s colleagues. His work for the stage from Macbeth with Judi Dench and Ian McKellen (1977) to Fiddler on the Roof (2020) has earned a record fourteen Olivier Awards nominations for Best Director. Here in America, beginning with Nicholas Nickleby, he has had nine Tony nominations, the last for his production of Oklahoma! In many ways, the Swan Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon, built under his leadership, inspired a return to galleried thrust theatres such as the Globe in London and our own Blackfriars Playhouse.
