The March sisters—Jo, Meg, Beth, and Amy—are ready to claim their place in your heart once again. But this time, under the bold direction of ASC veteran actor Constance Swain, they’re stepping off the page in a way you’ve never seen before. This is Little Women for today. This is a classic, redefined.

Leading the Way: Constance Swain’s Vision

A director, an artist, and a force of nature—Constance Swain is no stranger to the Blackfriars stage. With over 25 performances across five ASC seasons, Constance Swain has brought countless characters to life. Now, she’s channeling that experience to reimagine Little Women, and her vision is nothing short of extraordinary.

During the first table read, Swain shared her director’s notes, a powerful take on reclaiming this classic:

“For many of you, this world and the characters in it are like darling memories of cherished family members— the ones who guided and shaped you into your very being, as if flipping through meemaw’s old photo album and spotting your favorite cousin.
For others, like me, this world and the characters in it are as foreign as anything in the unknown. Why is that so? My hunch is this; keep the gate long enough, and those left on the outside looking in will eventually get the hint—this wasn’t, isn’t, and will never be for them. That, dear reader, though bleak, is the bona fide truth.
The classics, for longer than not, have always looked a certain way, of a certain hue, and through a certain lens. What if we changed that? What if everyone, regardless of how much or little they know of the March family, could instantly latch themselves onto these bewildering characters?
Ultimately, this narrative explores the full spectrum of what it means to be human— to love, to lose, to laugh, to grow up, to adventure, to advocate, to fall and stand up again, to be the author of your own story. What if we redefined what’s deemed as classic? What if we reclaimed this beloved narrative so that each and every one of us could sit side by side, flip open the same photo album, and proudly point out ourselves? That, dear reader, is the only classic story worth telling.”

This Little Women is a homecoming for some, an introduction for others, but above all, it’s a story for everyone.

The table read was about more than words on a page—it was about the artistry behind the scenes, where every detail matters. Meet some of the creative team turning Little Women into a world you can step into:

Amy Monsalve, Costume Designer, has woven each character’s personality into the fabric. Jo’s bold practicality, Amy’s theatrical flair, Beth’s understated sweetness, and Meg’s quiet grace all shine in Monsalve’s designs.

Conrad Gothard, Prop Shop Manager, is crafting a treasure trove of objects that bring the March family’s world to life. From well-loved books to sentimental keepsakes, each prop has its own story to tell.

This team’s artistry ensures that Little Women will be as visually and emotionally immersive as it is compelling.

A Cast That Brings It All to Life

At the heart of this production is a talented cast, each member bringing depth, nuance, and heart to their characters. From Jo’s fiery independence to Marmee’s quiet wisdom, the March family and their companions are in exceptional hands.

• Jo March: Played by Summer England, Jo’s fierce determination and unyielding creativity shine through every moment.
• Amy March / Minnie Kirke: Leah Gabriel breathes life into Amy’s ambition and flair, making her both endearing and unforgettable.
• Meg March / Mrs. Kirke: Portrayed by Raven Lorraine, Meg’s grace and quiet strength anchor the family.
• Beth March / Kitty Kirke: Charlene Hong White captures Beth’s gentleness and resilience with heartfelt sincerity.
• Abigail “Marmee” March / Aunt March: Angela Iannone brings wisdom, warmth, and humor to the family matriarch, Marmee, while adding sharp wit as Aunt March.
• Theodore “Laurie” Laurence: Joe Mucciolo embodies Laurie’s charm, mischief, and deep affection for the March family.
• Mr. John Brooke: Blake Henri brings a calm dignity and quiet confidence to Brooke, portraying a character whose steadiness and reliability anchor those around him.
• Professor Friedrich Bhaer: Rasell Holt brings understated wisdom and emotional depth to Bhaer, portraying a man of integrity whose intellect and kindness leave a lasting impression on everyone he encounters.
• Mr. March / Mr. Laurence: Christopher Seiler captures both the wisdom of Mr. March and the formidable presence of Mr. Laurence.

This cast’s chemistry was palpable from the very first table read. Laughter filled the room as Amy’s dramatic flair played against Jo’s fiery independence, while quieter moments from Beth and Marmee grounded the story in love and connection.
