Carl Steidtmann

Trustee

I choose to be an ASC Board member because:

It offered me the opportunity to give back to the broader Shakespeare community that, over the years, has given me countless opportunities to watch, study, debate, and
understand a body of literature that covers what it means to be human. Shakespeare
provides a context to discuss and debate the meaning of and the reasons for love, war,
jealousy, marriage, bigotry, power, betrayal, and history. We share a great responsibility
to past generations to preserve and pass on to new generations this incredible and
irreplaceable legacy.

My all-time favorite ASC moment was:

It was the very first time I walked into Blackfriars in the early summer of 2013 and saw
the play Twelfth Night.

I encourage you to support the ASC because:

Shakespeare had the support of the English monarchy. We are not so lucky. So here is
your chance to be a king or queen, princess or prince, and help us carry on this timeless
fellowship of the human spirit. Shakespeare’s work creates a community that
transcends time, geography, and politics. In this time of intense division, not unlike those
of the late sixteenth-century England, Shakespeare is a much-needed palliative in our
collective search for common ground and shared experience.

Biography:

Carl Steidtmann has been a student of Shakespeare since 1968, when he was
captivated by Helen Mirren’s portrayal of Cressida in the Royal Shakespeare Company
production of Troilus and Cressida. Spending 10 years at the University of Colorado, gaining degrees in history, literature, data analytics, and economics, enabled Carl to
experience much of the Shakespeare canon at the annual Colorado Shakespeare
Festival. While Shakespeare was not the man who paid the rent for Carl, economics did,
spending the last 12 years of his career as Chief Economist for Deloitte, the largest
professional services firm in the world.
