Kerry Kisa

Board of Trustees

I AM PROUD TO BE AN ASC BOARD MEMBER BECAUSE:

It provides me with the opportunity to be a part of the study and innovation provided by a company that pushes – through original practices – a greater understanding and awareness of the language of theater.

MY ALL-TIME FAVORITE ASC MOMENT WAS:

My favorite moment(s) at the Blackfriars Playhouse are the moments when I see the faces of 100 of my students laugh (or cry) at a production and the ensuing pride they display because they “got” Shakespeare.

YOU SHOULD SUPPORT THE ASC BECAUSE:

It literally changes lives.

BIOGRAPHY:

Kerry Kisa is a former journalist who covered stories that took her from a field hospital in the Bosnian War to the cockpit of a Blue Angels jet. She now works as a teacher in an International Baccalaureate program, guiding students through the high-level literature curriculum. As an IB teacher, she has the luxury of exploring global issues through literature from around the world, exploring concepts of identity, for example, in works such as Hamlet as compared with Toni Morrison’s Song of Solomon and Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi.

She is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, with degrees in both Journalism and English, and she earned a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from Old Dominion University. She has spent many summers studying on the stage of the ASC with fellow teachers and was able to act and learn new strategies on the stage of the Globe in London in 2019. She is married to Dr. Erik Kisa and is the proud mother of twins who began attending the ASC when they were 9 years old. They are now 26 and have continued their love of theater sparked by the Blackfriars.
