KNOW BEFORE YOU GO:
the MBU rose terrace
This summer the American Shakespeare Center is partnering with Mary Baldwin University, performing at their private, vine-covered brick courtyard known as the Rose Terrace. This open, yet intimate experience is the perfect backdrop for Shakespeare’s mystical and bloody tragedy, Macbeth.
Things to Know
Where is the Rose Terrace?
Rose Terrace is located at 203 N Market St, Staunton, VA 24401.
What about parking?
Parking, including ADA parking, is available at the MBU Sky 1 Parking Lot. Which is right across the a small access street to Rose Terrace.
Are there restrooms?
There are ADA accessible porta-johns available at the Sky 1 Parking Lot.
Is it within a walkable distance from Downtown Staunton?
The Rose Terrace is about 0.2 miles from the Playhouse. However, it is up a pretty steep hill.
Do we need to bring our own chairs or blankets?
Due to the different layout of this space, each ticket purchased will be for a chair—which will be provided by ASC.
How do I pick seats? When do the “doors” open?
All seats will be general admission. We will open the seating area around 40 mins prior to curtain (3:20 PM or 6:20 PM).
What about ADA accommodations?
The space will be ADA accessible and we are able to arrange reserved seating areas for ADA accommodations. Please email tickets@americanshakespearecenter.com with specific questions.
What about food and drink?
We are unable to allow food and drink inside the Rose Terrace. We encourage dining in Downtown Staunton (outside dining is back for Beverley St from Friday night – Sunday!) or finding a spot on Campus for a pre-show picnic. Bottled water is permitted inside the venue.
What are the age recommendations?
ASC welcomes children seven and older to the Rose Terrace for this event. We encourage parents and guardians to make decisions on the appropriateness of the content for their children.
Can we bring our dog?
We love dogs but have found they may not love Shakespeare as much. For the comfort of all patrons, we are not able to allow dogs at the Rose Terrace (does not apply to Service Animals).
Do I need to wear a mask?
We ask that patrons are masked from check-in to their seats, and any time you are out of your seat. Once in your seat you may remove your mask. We ask that if you are unvaccinated that you continue to mask inside the Rose Terrace.
ASC is currently continuing universal masking for all patrons at the Blackfriars Playhouse, regardless of vaccination status.
You can read more about ASC’s SafeStart plan here.
What about safety?
- Chair spaces are socially distanced according to the most recent guidelines.
- We will be using ticket scanners and digital tickets to avoid passing paper tickets back and forth. Please print your ticket at home or bring your mobile device (with our ticket email attachment loaded) to be scanned.
- There will be interactive digital programs in place of paper programs.
What about rain?
We will make every effort to continue on in light rain. If there is heavy rainfall or lighting we will cancel the show. You will receive an email from our Box Office announcing the cancellation and your options on what to do with your tickets. We do our best to balance the safety of our actors, patrons, and staff with trying to deliver the promised performance. Virginia weather is notoriously fickle so we are not always able to make a call early, if you have concerns about travel and potential weather, we encourage you to reach out to our Box Office to discuss options.
Virginia summers can also be hot – and buggy – so we recommend sunscreen and bug spray. Bottled water is permitted at the venue.
