Teacher Seminar Details

The ASC Approach to page and stage features experiential workshops that immerse teachers in ASC’s interactive approach to teaching Shakespeare. Participants will engage in hands-on sessions focused on text, staging, and audience dynamics, with dedicated time for meta-teaching reflection and collaboration with peers.

Seminars also frequently include enrichment opportunities with guest artists and scholars, providing fresh perspectives and practical tools to make Shakespeare inspiring and accessible for teachers and students at all levels. 

Foundational Teacher Seminar Sample Schedule

A full-day seminar (8-9 hours) with interactive workshops and engaging sessions.

Saturday

9:00 – 9:30 AM: Introduction to the Play
9:45 – 10:45 AM: Shakespeare’s Verse Workshop (Unlocking rhythm, meter, and language techniques)
11:00 AM – 12:30 PM: Shakespeare’s Rhetoric Workshop (Exploring persuasion, argumentation, and rhetorical devices in Shakespeare’s text)
12:30 – 2:00 PM: Lunch Break (Not provided—explore Staunton’s dining options!)
2:00 – 3:00 PM: Shakespeare’s Stage Directions Workshop (Movement, blocking, and implicit cues in the text)

Day 1 Wednesday: The Stage and Its Technology

2 hrs: Module 1: Introduce the Play and Shakespeare’s Staging Conditions
3 hrs: Module 2: Editing Shakespeare & the Cue Script

Day 2 Thursday: The Words on the Page

2.5 hrs: Module 3: Shakespeare’s Verse & Rhetoric
2 hrs: Module 4: Embedded Stage Directions
1.5 hrs: Guest artist/scholar visit OR rehearsal observation
2 hrs: Staging Session 1: Annotate monologues for Verse/Rhetoric performance choices and show group
3 hrs: See Performance #1 at Blackfriars Playhouse

Day 3 Friday: The Infinite Variety of Choices

1.5 hrs: Module 5: The Audience as Scene Partner
2.5 hrs: Module 6: Special Effects – Violence and Soundscapes
1.5 hrs: Guest artist/scholar visit OR rehearsal observation
2 hrs: Staging Session 2: Return to prompt book and annotate texts from the day for performance choices; show group
3 hrs: See Performance #2 at Blackfriars Playhouse

Day 4 Saturday: The Page Meets the Stage

1 hr: Actor Talkback or other Blackfriars panel
2 hrs: Module 7: Shakespeare in “Translation”
1.5 hrs: Module 8: Adaptation and Cross-Curricular Connections
2 hrs: Staging Session 3: Return to prompt book and annotate texts from the day for performance choices; show group

Day 5 Sunday: The Final Act
