The Part-Time HR Generalist supports the American Shakespeare Center’s (ASC) human resources functions by overseeing hiring, onboarding, payroll coordination, benefits administration, and policy compliance. This role ensures smooth and efficient HR operations while upholding ASC’s commitment to professionalism, integrity, and inclusivity.

The HR Generalist reports to Jessica Rose, Finance Manager, and collaborates with the Finance Team, Executive Director,  and other department heads to implement HR policies and practices.


Key Responsibilities

Hiring and Onboarding

  • Coordinate and conduct new hire onboarding, including training and personnel file management.
  • Facilitate background checks and employee eligibility verification.
  • Support hiring processes by collaborating with department managers on recruitment needs.

Payroll, Benefits, and Leave Administration

  • Partner with the Finance Team to manage payroll, ensuring accuracy in employee compensation.
  • Oversee employee benefits enrollment, including health insurance, retirement plans, and other offerings.
  • Administer vacation, sick leave, and other time-off policies in compliance with company guidelines.
  • Assist in the annual Open Enrollment process, providing employees with benefit updates and enrollment support.

HR Compliance and Policy Implementation

  • Maintain compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, regularly reviewing policies and practices.
  • Address and document employee relations matters, including disputes, disciplinary actions, and investigations.
  • Provide support to Dept supervisors when needed on performance management.
  • Stay informed on trends, best practices, and legal updates in human resources and employment law.

HR Operations and Administrative Support

  • Support HR audits and processes, including:
    • W-2 and 1099 processing
    • Workers’ Compensation Insurance audits
    • Employee tax form review
  • Maintain organized and confidential personnel records.
  • Assist with HR-related reporting and data analysis as needed.
  • Perform other HR-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required Skills and Experience

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with a strong ability to engage with employees at all levels.
  • Strong interpersonal, negotiation, and conflict-resolution skills to foster a positive work environment.
  • High attention to detail and strong organizational skills to manage multiple HR functions efficiently.
  • Thorough knowledge of employment-related laws and regulations.
  • Ability to handle sensitive information with integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality.
  • Proficiency in HR software, preferably Mineral or other HR-related platforms.

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • At least one year of experience in human resources or a related field.
  • Experience with nonprofit or arts organizations is a plus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND SCHEDULE

  • Flexibility: The hours and schedule may vary per week based on the time of year. A typical work week is Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.; however, flexibility is required as the schedule may change depending on the seasonal needs of the Finance Team.
  • Work Style: A combination of on-site and remote work is available.
  • Location: Based in Staunton, Virginia.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

  • This is a part-time hourly position with a pay rate of $20 per hour at 15 hours a week and no benefits with a 90-day probationary period.
