Jan Powell
Jan is a professional freelance theatre director with a primary focus in Shakespeare. As the Founding Artistic Director of the Tygres Heart Shakespeare Company in Portland, OR from 1989 through 1997, she produced and directed over two dozen Shakespeare productions, including the entire canon of history play. In 1996-97, she was awarded the Rae Mona Reynolds Humanitarian Award for excellence in promoting theatre arts in Oregon, the Community Ear Award for outstanding accessible theatre, and served as President of the Shakespeare Association of America. Jan’s recent freelance directing has included: Goblin Market for Stark Raving Theatre in Portland, The Twilight of the Gods for the Stoneham Theatre and Ensemble in Boston, As You Like It and Cloud Nine for the Mendocino Shakespeare Festival, The Comedy of Errors for the San Francisco Shakespeare Festival, The Complete Works of Wm. Shakespeare (Abridged) for triangle! productions, Haydn’s L’Infedelta Delusa for Chamber Opera Oregon, and Measure for Measure for Linfield College. Jan trained in Shakespearean performance at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London with the nationally renowned Shakespeare & Company in Massachusetts. Her professional acting training was at the Lee Strasberg Institute in Los Angeles. She co-directed Othello, with Jim Warren, for S2’s Charm Your Tongue Tour and directed Romeo and Juliet for S2’s 2001/02 Blush and Swoon Tour.
