This October, the American Shakespeare Center (ASC) joined the vibrant celebration of Staunton Pride 2024, embracing the energy, inclusivity, and joy that filled Gypsy Hill Park. From our interactive booth to the colorful performances at the Bandstand, this Halloween-themed Pride was a day to remember. We were thrilled to be part of it, connecting with our community and celebrating the beauty of diversity. Here’s a look back at some of the highlights!

Our booth, buzzing with activity, became a central spot for festival-goers excited to engage with theatre. Featuring a colorful prize wheel and ASC merchandise, attendees could spin to win items like stickers, t-shirts, and free theatre tickets. ASC’s Director of Education Programs, Aubrey Whitlock, and Group Sales Coordinator, Kara Hankard, greeted everyone with open arms and infectious energy, turning our booth into a hub of laughter, connection, and discovery. They brought the Blackfriars Playhouse spirit to life, inviting Pride-goers to step into the world of theatre and feel the warmth of our community.

The Gypsy Hill Bandstand became the heart of the celebration, with a fantastic lineup of performers keeping spirits high. The stage, decorated with rainbow balloons and a large “Staunton Pride” banner, hosted local talents who showcased the inclusivity and vibrancy of our community. One of the day’s highlights was a surprise visit from Staunton’s very own friendly neighborhood Spider-man, a.k.a. SWallCrawler, who climbed trees, posed with fans (including our Executive Director Vanessa Morosco), and added a playful touch to the celebration. This superhero appearance delighted attendees of all ages, showing that Pride is for everyone, even web-slingers!

Throughout the day, our team shared stories and upcoming events with attendees curious about ASC’s work. Whether talking about the magic of live theatre, special ticket deals, or No Kidding Book Club, each conversation was a reminder of how art brings people together. This meaningful engagement at Pride extended ASC’s mission beyond the stage, allowing us to celebrate theatre’s role in fostering community connections.

In celebration of Pride, Mili Koncelik, ASC’s Playhouse Patron Loyalty Manager, designed a limited-edition sticker featuring Shakespeare with a rainbow twist. These free stickers were a huge hit among attendees, symbolizing ASC’s commitment to inclusivity in the arts. Attendees proudly displayed their stickers throughout the event, creating a visual reminder that ASC is a place where everyone belongs and that our stories welcome all voices.
